Gluten is contained in many of the foods eaten in the Western diet. It is necessary, though, for those with an intolerance to it, to remove it from the diet. The disadvantage of this removal, is that it becomes imperative to read the labels on products, to ensure that they do not contain gluten. This can be very confusing, and not all labels are accurate.
Whatever gluten is, it must be tasty! The taste of alternatives to wheat, oats, rye or barley is not always nice! Some leave an unpleasant after-taste!
Further, gluten may be hidden within innocent-looking foods, such as vitamin supplements or additives. Lipsticks and postage stamps can also be a hazard!
Manufacturers, though, are realizing the lucrative and expanding market that creating gluten-free foods represents. The range of available food stuffs has grown dramatically. This has been beneficial to consumers both with increased variety and with greater competition in pricing. Restaurants and take-away food establishments are also seeing the advantage of offering suitable options.
It is important for those with Coeliac Disease to ensure there are adequate levels of fibre, iron, B12, thiamine and Vitamin C in the diet, as these may be deficient.
The good news is that in reducing wheat from the diet, which is often a primary ingredient in such foods as cakes and biscuits, then the intake of fats and sugars may also be lowered. By increasing consumption of fruits and vegetables, the positive side-effects may be experienced, of weight-loss and brighter skin!
